Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Acupuncture and dry needling are two of the most powerful and evidence-supported needling therapies available in modern rehabilitation — and at Oakville Physiotherapy Centre, we offer both under one roof, delivered by certified physiotherapists and Registered Acupuncturists who understand exactly when to use each approach. Whether your goal is to extinguish a stubborn trigger point that no amount of massage has touched, or to address a complex systemic condition through classical meridian-based treatment, our practitioners bring the clinical precision and the depth of training to make it work.

Needling therapies work by accessing the nervous system directly — interrupting pain signals, resetting dysfunctional motor patterns, promoting tissue healing, and restoring regulatory balance in ways that hands-on therapy simply cannot reach. At our clinic, every needling treatment is preceded by a thorough assessment and followed by a clear, progressive plan. We combine needling with physiotherapy, massage, and exercise prescription to deliver outcomes that last — not just temporary relief.

What Acupuncture & Dry Needling Do for You

Six clinically-documented effects that make needling therapy uniquely powerful. Hover each card.

Targeted Pain Relief

Needles inserted at precise anatomical points modulate the nervous system, triggering a cascade of endorphins and enkephalins — your body's own pain-killing compounds — for lasting, drug-free relief.

Accelerated Recovery

Dry needling creates a local twitch response in dysfunctional muscle tissue, resetting the motor end plate and dramatically speeding the recovery of overused or injured muscles.

Reduced Inflammation

Needle stimulation promotes the release of anti-inflammatory neuropeptides and increases local microcirculation, drawing healing blood flow directly to the affected tissue.

Restored Mobility

By deactivating trigger points and releasing myofascial restrictions, needling treatments rapidly restore joint range of motion that stretching and manual therapy alone cannot achieve.

Nervous System Balance

Traditional acupuncture regulates the autonomic nervous system — shifting patients out of chronic fight-or-flight stress states into restorative parasympathetic dominance for improved sleep, mood, and energy.

Holistic Systemic Benefits

Beyond musculoskeletal care, acupuncture has well-documented effects on headaches, digestive health, menstrual irregularities, and immune regulation — treating the whole person, not just the symptom.

Our Needling Approaches

We offer six distinct needling modalities — each suited to different conditions and goals. Select an approach below to learn exactly what it involves.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a Western, evidence-based technique performed by our physiotherapists. A fine monofilament needle is inserted directly into a trigger point — a hyper-irritable knot in a taut muscle band — to elicit a local twitch response. This involuntary muscle contraction resets the neuromuscular junction, breaks the pain-spasm-pain cycle, and restores normal muscle function faster than manual therapy alone. It's especially effective for stubborn muscular pain that hasn't responded to conventional treatment.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

A typical acupuncture or dry needling session at Oakville Physiotherapy Centre, step by step.

Step 01
Initial Health Screen

Your practitioner reviews your health history, contraindications, medications, and previous treatments to ensure acupuncture or dry needling is appropriate and safe for you.

Step 02
Assessment & Point Selection

A focused physical assessment identifies trigger points, movement restrictions, or meridian imbalances. Your practitioner selects the precise points to needle based on clinical findings — not a generic protocol.

Step 03
Needle Insertion

Sterile, single-use needles are inserted with speed and precision. Most patients feel minimal to no pain. Needles are typically retained for 20–30 minutes, during which many patients enter a deeply relaxed state.

Step 04
Adjunct Techniques

Where indicated, your practitioner may add electroacupuncture stimulation, cupping, moxa, or gentle manual therapy to complement the needling and enhance the therapeutic response.

Step 05
Post-Treatment Guidance

You receive clear aftercare instructions — hydration, activity modification, stretches — and a recommended treatment frequency. Mild soreness or fatigue for 24 hours after treatment is completely normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients are surprised by how little they feel. The needles used are 10–15× thinner than a hypodermic needle — there's no hollow bore and no injected substance. You may feel a brief pinch, a dull ache, or a spreading warmth when a trigger point is contacted (the 'de qi' sensation). For dry needling, a local twitch response is common — it lasts less than a second and is usually described as a satisfying release. Your practitioner will always check in and adjust pressure based on your comfort.

Acute conditions often see significant improvement in 3–5 sessions. Chronic or complex presentations may require 8–12 sessions to achieve lasting change. Your practitioner will provide a clear treatment plan after the initial assessment, with goals and expected milestones outlined. Many patients also continue with monthly maintenance sessions once their primary concern is resolved.

Dry needling is a Western, anatomically-driven technique performed by physiotherapists — it targets myofascial trigger points and is based on neuromuscular science. Traditional acupuncture is a complete medical system rooted in Chinese medicine that stimulates meridian points to address both local and systemic conditions. Both use the same type of sterile monofilament needle. At our clinic, many patients benefit from elements of both approaches within the same treatment.

Acupuncture is not covered by OHIP for most patients, but it is included in the majority of extended health benefit plans in Ontario when performed by a Registered Acupuncturist or a physiotherapist certified in acupuncture. We recommend confirming your coverage level with your insurer. Our clinic offers direct billing to all major insurance providers to minimize out-of-pocket payment at the time of treatment.

Absolutely. All needles used at our clinic are pre-sterilized, individually packaged, single-use, and disposed of immediately after treatment in a certified sharps container. There is zero risk of cross-contamination. Our practitioners follow strict infection control protocols at all times.

Yes — and this is often the most effective approach. Acupuncture and dry needling prepare the neuromuscular system, reduce guarding, and improve tissue extensibility. This makes subsequent physiotherapy exercises, joint mobilizations, or massage therapy significantly more effective. Many of our patients combine disciplines in the same visit for a comprehensive, coordinated treatment outcome.

Acupuncture is very safe, but there are some contraindications. We do not needle directly over active infections, open wounds, or tumour sites. Patients with bleeding disorders or on blood thinners require extra care. Pregnancy does not exclude acupuncture — many points are safe and beneficial — but certain points are avoided. Your practitioner will conduct a full health screen before treatment and adapt the approach to your situation.
