Who can benefit from lymphatic drainage massage therapy?

Lymphatic drainage massage therapy** may benefit people with lymphedema, limb heaviness or swelling caused by lymph-node damage or removal. It may also be considered after certain surgeries when approved by the surgeon. Unexplained swelling should be medically assessed before treatment begins.

What happens during a manual lymphatic drainage session?

During **manual lymphatic drainage**, a trained therapist uses gentle, slow and repetitive movements to encourage lymph fluid toward healthy drainage pathways. Unlike deep tissue massage, the pressure is light because lymphatic vessels are located close to the skin. Treatment should not be painful.

What can I expect at my first lymphatic drainage appointment?

Your first appointment may include questions about your symptoms, surgeries, cancer treatment, medications, infections and previous blood clots. The therapist may assess swelling, skin condition, tissue texture, movement and limb measurements before deciding whether **lymphatic drainage physiotherapy** is suitable.

Is lymphatic drainage massage enough to treat lymphedema?

Massage alone is not always enough. **Lymphedema physiotherapy in Oakville** may combine manual lymphatic drainage with compression garments or bandaging, exercise, skin care and self-management guidance. This broader approach helps manage swelling and limit fluid build-up between appointments.

When should lymphatic drainage massage be avoided?

Lymphatic drainage massage** may need to be avoided or delayed if you have a suspected blood clot, active infection or cellulitis, uncontrolled heart failure, acute kidney problems or unexplained sudden swelling. Seek prompt medical care for swelling accompanied by redness, heat, fever, severe pain or breathing difficulty.
