Wheelchair & Walkers - Oakville, ON

Wheelchair Assessments & Fittings in Oakville

The right mobility device should support your safety, comfort and independence—not create new difficulties. At Oakville Physiotherapy Centre, our walker and wheelchair assessments consider your strength, balance, posture, mobility goals and everyday environment before recommending suitable equipment.

Whether you need assistance following surgery, because of a neurological condition or due to changes in mobility, our team helps you understand your options and use your device confidently.

Who May Benefit from a Mobility Assessment?

A walker or wheelchair assessment may be appropriate if you:

  • Have difficulty walking safely or independently
  • Experience frequent falls or loss of balance
  • Become tired or short of breath while walking
  • Are recovering from surgery, injury or hospitalization
  • Have a neurological or progressive medical condition
  • Need better postural support or pressure management
  • Have outgrown your current mobility device
  • Experience discomfort while using a walker or wheelchair

What We Assess

A comprehensive mobility assessment may include:

  • Strength, balance and range of motion
  • Walking pattern, endurance and fall risk
  • Transfers between beds, chairs and toilets
  • Sitting posture and pressure-management needs
  • Upper-body function for wheelchair propulsion
  • Ability to operate brakes, controls and accessories
  • Home accessibility, including doors and thresholds
  • Caregiver assistance and transportation needs
  • Personal goals at home and in the community

Walker Assessment & Fitting

A walker should provide the right amount of support without interfering with your natural movement. During your assessment, we evaluate which style is most appropriate, such as a standard walker, two-wheeled walker or four-wheeled rollator.

Your walker is adjusted for height, hand position and brake access. We also provide practical training for walking, turning, sitting, standing and navigating common household surfaces.

Wheelchair Assessment & Fitting

Wheelchairs are not one-size-fits-all. A proper fitting considers how you sit, move, transfer and complete daily activities.

Our wheelchair assessments and fittings may evaluate:

  • Manual or power mobility requirements
  • Seat width, depth and height
  • Back, head and postural support
  • Armrest and footrest positioning
  • Cushion and pressure-relief needs
  • Propulsion ability or control access
  • Indoor and outdoor mobility requirements
  • Space available within your home
  • Future changes in your mobility needs

The goal is to recommend a device that supports safe mobility while improving comfort, positioning and daily participation.

ADP Assessments for Walkers & Wheelchairs

Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program may help eligible residents with long-term physical disabilities pay for approved mobility equipment.

ADP assessments for walkers and wheelchairs must be completed by a registered ADP authorizer. The authorizer performs a comprehensive functional assessment, confirms whether program criteria are met and works with an ADP-registered vendor to select an appropriate device.

Eligibility and funding are determined by the Assistive Devices Program. Contact Oakville Physiotherapy Centre to discuss your mobility needs and confirm the availability of an ADP-authorized assessment for your device category.

Frequently Asked Questions

The assessment examines your strength, balance, walking ability, posture, transfers, endurance and daily environment. Your clinician uses these findings to determine which mobility device and features may best support your needs.

A walker may be suitable when you can still walk but require additional balance or weight-bearing support. A wheelchair may be considered when walking is unsafe, highly limited or too physically demanding. A professional assessment helps determine the safest option.

Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program may contribute toward approved mobility devices for eligible residents with long-term physical disabilities. For many eligible devices, ADP pays 75% of the approved price, while the client normally pays the remaining 25%. Eligibility and funding amounts are determined by ADP.

To qualify for ADP funding, you must be an Ontario resident, have a valid Ontario health card, require the mobility device for 6 months or longer, and meet the clinical criteria for the specific device. Your income is not considered when determining eligibility.

An appropriate fitting supports posture, comfort, pressure distribution, transfers and efficient mobility. A poorly fitted wheelchair may contribute to discomfort, skin pressure or difficulty using the chair safely.

Bring your Ontario health card if ADP funding is being considered, along with your current mobility device, relevant medical information and the footwear you normally use. A family member or caregiver may also attend when their input or assistance is helpful.
