What we treat

Pelvic Health Conditions We Treat

Explore pelvic floor conditions commonly addressed through pelvic physiotherapy and learn how treatment may be tailored to your symptoms, comfort and goals.

What to expect

Your First Pelvic Physiotherapy Appointment

Your first pelvic physiotherapy session begins with a private assessment focused on understanding your symptoms, comfort and goals. Here’s what you can expect:

01

Detailed Health History

We review your bladder, bowel, and sexual health history, lifestyle, fluid intake, and previous treatments in a private, judgment-free conversation.

02

Posture & Movement Screen

We assess how your breathing, posture, and movement patterns affect your pelvic floor — because the pelvis doesn't work in isolation.

03

Internal Examination (Optional)

With your consent, an internal assessment provides invaluable information about muscle strength, coordination, tension, and tissue health. This is never mandatory.

04

Individualized Treatment Plan

We explain our findings clearly and co-create your treatment plan — including session frequency, home exercises, and realistic timelines for your goals.

Treatment methods

Evidence-Based Pelvic Physiotherapy Treatments

Our pelvic physiotherapy treatments are selected according to your assessment, symptoms and goals, providing personalised care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training

Individualized strengthening and coordination exercises — not just generic Kegels. We prescribe the right exercise for your specific dysfunction.

Pelvic Floor Down-Training

Many pelvic conditions come from muscles that are too tight, not too weak. We teach release, breathing, and relaxation techniques to restore balance.

Manual Therapy & Massage

Hands-on treatment for scar tissue, trigger points, myofascial restrictions, and joint mobilizations to restore pain-free function.

Bladder & Bowel Retraining

Evidence-based protocols to normalize toilet habits, reduce urgency and frequency, and restore confident, controlled bladder function.

Pain Neuroscience Education

Understanding why pain persists is part of the cure. We use evidence-based education to reduce fear, change pain perception, and accelerate recovery.

Return to Exercise Guidance

Safe, progressive return to running, lifting, yoga, and sport — with load management principles to protect your pelvic floor as you rebuild strength.

We use validated questionnaires and objective measures at every reassessment to quantify your progress and demonstrate how far you've come.

Questions answered

Frequently Asked Questions

The assessment is designed to be gentle and entirely within your control. An internal examination is optional — you can decline at any time and we will still provide excellent care. Many assessments are completed entirely externally. We move at your pace and explain every step before we do it.

Never. Pelvic floor muscles respond to training at any age. We regularly see patients who have lived with incontinence, prolapse, or pelvic pain for decades and achieve remarkable results. Neuroplasticity and muscle adaptation don't have an expiry date.

We recommend a pelvic floor assessment at 6–8 weeks postpartum, regardless of how your birth went. Many women return even earlier for education, breathing work, and gentle core reconnection. Waiting until symptoms become severe means longer recovery — earlier is always better.

Kegels are frequently prescribed incorrectly and can make some conditions worse. If your pelvic floor is overactive or hypertonic, strengthening exercises will increase symptoms. A pelvic floor physiotherapist assesses whether you need strengthening, relaxation, or coordination training — then teaches you how to do it correctly. Generic Kegel advice is a poor substitute.

Yes. Post-prostatectomy incontinence, chronic prostatitis, pelvic pain, urinary urgency, and erectile dysfunction related to pelvic floor tension are all effectively treated with pelvic floor physiotherapy. Men are significantly undertreated for these conditions because awareness is low — but outcomes are excellent.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Arrive with a normally full (not overly full) bladder for assessment. Bring a list of any medications and a 2-day bladder diary if you have one (we'll send you a template). Most importantly, bring your questions — there's no topic that's off-limits in our clinic.
