Does shockwave therapy work for plantar fasciitis?

Shockwave may be considered for persistent plantar heel pain after a physiotherapy assessment. It is commonly combined with strengthening, load management and footwear guidance. Results vary, and not every person with heel pain is an appropriate candidate.

Is shockwave physiotherapy painful?

Treatment can create tapping, pressure or temporary discomfort. Your physiotherapist can adjust the intensity to your tolerance. Mild tenderness, redness or soreness may occur after treatment.

How many shockwave sessions will I need?

Your physiotherapist will assess your diagnosis, symptom duration, health history, goals and response to care before recommending a treatment plan. The schedule is individual, and additional sessions should not be recommended without reviewing your progress.

Can I walk after shockwave treatment for heel pain?

Many patients can continue normal daily movement, but activity recommendations depend on symptom severity and the condition being treated. Your physiotherapist may temporarily modify running, jumping or other high-load activities.

Is shockwave physiotherapy covered by insurance in Ontario?

Coverage depends on your extended health plan. When shockwave is provided as part of physiotherapy by a registered physiotherapist, it may be eligible under physiotherapy benefits. Confirm your plan limits, referral requirements and reimbursement rules with your insurer.

Do I need a doctor’s referral for shockwave physiotherapy?

A physician’s referral is generally not required to book physiotherapy in Ontario. However, your insurance provider may request a referral before reimbursing treatment. Contact your insurer or the clinic if you are uncertain about your coverage.
